To share this joy and to break their fasts with their fellow Muslims, about 15,000 people go to the Grand Mosque of Damascus, also known as the Umayyad Mosque, one of the oldest and largest mosques in the world, every evening in Ramadan. It is located at one of the holiest sites in the old city of Damascus and is also of great architectural importance.
The mosque’s massive iftars, organized by the Syrian Ministry of Foundations and benevolent, wealthy individuals, host people from all walks of life, rich and poor, young and old alike. These go beyond a simple effort to feed the poor and stand out as serious social integration events.
